President Joe Biden’s popularity continues to decline, a new poll has revealed, and Americans strongly favor Republicans over the ruling Democratic Party in the 2022 Congressional races.
Only 36% of Americans approve of Biden’s performance at work, compared to 53% who disapprove, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday. While Republicans and Democrats were predictably polarized, Independents were decidedly negative about the president’s performance, with 56% disapproval.
The results are compared to an overall approval rating of 38% for Biden in Quinnipiac’s survey last month – and a far cry from the first months of his presidency, when nearly 60% of Americans approved his performance.
As recently as July, an Associated Press poll put his rating at 62% among independents. A Gallup poll released last month also showed Biden suffered the biggest drop in approval ratings for a new president since Harry Truman tried to replace his late predecessor, Franklin Roosevelt, in 1945.
Biden’s declining popularity is a troubling trend for Democrats heading into the 2022 election. Quinnipiac’s poll found Americans want Republicans to take control of the House of Representatives and Senate from Democrats through margins of 46 to 38 and 46 to 40, respectively. Independents favor Republicans in congressional races by a 10% margin – 41 to 31 in the House and 44 to 34 in the Senate.
When asked an open ended question about the most important problem facing the United States today, respondents cited several common concerns: division and polarization, at 11%; economic woes, 10%; the border crisis, 8%; and inflation, 8%. Only 5% cited the Covid-19 pandemic.
The number of illegal aliens crossing the U.S. border is at its highest in six decades, and inflation peaked in 30 years in October.
According to the Quinnipiac poll, only 34% of those polled said they approved of the way Biden runs the economy, compared to 59% who disapproved of it. His foreign policy rating was also negative, with 33% approval and 55% fault.
While the president touted a “Durable and solid” economic recovery, Quinnipiac found that 61% of Americans believe the economy is deteriorating. Only 16% of survey respondents said the economy is improving. More than half (53%) said they couldn’t find all the groceries they wanted in the supermarket.
About half (51%) said they didn’t think Biden was being honest, according to the Quinnipiac poll. Only 41% of those polled (including 32% independents) said they thought the president was honest. The poll showed that most Americans (57%) disapprove of his leadership skills, and 56% of those polled said they did not find his administration competent. About 52% of survey participants disapprove of Biden’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate for large employers, while 46% approve of it.
