Biden set to authorize shipment of Abrams tanks to Ukraine

President Joe Biden is set to announce that the United States will supply dozens of M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine’s armed forces as the war against invading Russians continues in the Eastern European country.

It is a move that represents a significant increase in the firepower provided by the West to Ukraine’s weary defenders and comes the same week that the German Chancellor announced that her country would also facilitate the transfer of Polish tanks to the country.

The official announcement could come as early as Wednesday, according to several media outlets that cited US officials at first news. A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment on any decision during a daily press briefing on Tuesday afternoon.

It would follow months of US officials angst over decisions about the prospect of sending military hardware to Ukraine that could lead to attacks on Russian territory, a development that experts say would seriously escalate tensions between states. States and Moscow.

The news came the same day that two members of the Senate, Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, held a joint press conference calling on the president to endorse the aid package.

“The fact that the tanks will be pouring in from Germany and hopefully America, for me is something to celebrate,” Mr Graham said at the press conference, according to The hill. “It is an acknowledgment that the goal now is to be with Ukraine until every last Russian soldier is expelled from Ukrainian soil.”

Meanwhile, proponents of more aid to Ukraine have been sounding the alarm about the need for tanks and other heavy weapons for months.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, even seemed to indicate that the leaders of various Western countries were basically involved in an international game of chicken, hoping that their counterparts would be the first to approve the transfer of tanks to the Ukrainian army.

“There are times when you should not hesitate. When people say – I’ll give you tanks if somebody else does,” he said.
