Biden again faced widespread concerns about his age. Seventy-three percent of Americans say they are seriously concerned that Biden’s age of 80 could negatively affect his current level of physical and mental competence, and 76 percent are worried about his ability to perform. another full term as president if re-elected. .

In hypothetical matchups with the 2024 GOP challengers, Biden was statistically tied with one exception: Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley was the only Republican candidate to hold a lead over Biden, with 49% to 43% for Biden.

Former President Donald Trump edged Biden by one percentage point, with 47 percent to 46 percent. A Wall Street Journal poll last week found that if a showdown between the two candidates took place today, the two would be tied at 46 percent.

In the same poll, Trump continued to hold his position at the top of the field of Republican presidential candidates. Fifty-two percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters backed Trump, compared to 18 percent who backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Behind DeSantis were former Vice President Mike Pence and Haley at 7 percent and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy at 6 percent.

The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS from August 25-31 among a random national sample of 1,503 adults drawn from a probability panel. Results from the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 points.
