Beware of deer on Abilene area roads, what to do if you encounter one

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – With deer mating season on the way, deer in the greater area are constantly on the move. They approach the roads of Texas as the rutting season begins in mid-November.

Annaliese Scoggin, a wildlife biologist for the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, said deer like to travel near roads because of the greenery near roads because when it rains, water stays on roads, allowing new plants to grow.

James Cummings, Texas Game Warden, said that in the fall deer like to move around a lot, which makes their whereabouts unpredictable.

“The rut has started and it’s what could best be described as the junior high deer. The doe has become receptive and the bucks are beginning to fight for their attention. They’re under a lot of pressure because of it and then you’re going to have the chase, the pressure is going to push them,” Cummings explained. “So there’s going to be a lot of movement in the next few weeks.”

Ricardo Gutierrez, owner of RGF Insurance, said filing an insurance claim is crucial to getting your car repaired. He added that the first thing drivers should do if they hit or are hit by a deer is to call the police and file a police report.

“Whether they show up or not, of course you have it at three in the morning in the middle of nowhere, you won’t be able to do it,” Gutierrez said. “As soon as you get to where you can make the phone call, it will make the insurance company’s claims process much easier, because now we have something to look at legally.”

However, even if you filed an insurance claim, that doesn’t mean your car will be fixed right away. Alonzo Sanchez, owner of West Texas Collision, said you may have to wait weeks to get your car repaired due to supply chain issues.

“A lot of things have been out of stock, some have dates [so] you know how out of stock they are. It’s two weeks, three weeks, some don’t have an ETA. It just depends on the model,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez said last year his body shop repaired about 40 deer-damaged cars. He recommended drivers who hit a deer take their car in for a check, regardless of the extent of the damage, as there could be internal damage to the car, such as a cracked radiator, which could lead to further damage. .
