Berlusconi names the only person with a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine — RT World News

No one except the Pope and the Holy See is suggesting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing fighting, former Italian PM lamented

The world pays “an unsustainable price” for the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Wednesday, calling for increased efforts to find a way to end hostilities.

Currently acting as the leader of the Forza Italia party, Berlusconi told the Corriere della Sera newspaper that although his country remains on the side of the West, Europe and NATO, he is nevertheless upset that “Nobody, except the Pope and the Holy See, has solutions leading to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.”

He added that the fighting in Ukraine, which has entered its eleventh month, is costing “lives, suffering and economic damage” and adds a cost to the whole world.

The Vatican, where the pontiff’s jurisdiction is known as the Holy See, has repeatedly called for a peaceful end to the fighting and said it is ready to facilitate negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Last year, Pope Francis called on President Vladimir Putin to halt the Russian military operation in Ukraine and urged his Ukrainian counterpart, Vladimir Zelensky, to “open to serious proposals for peace”.

The pope, however, admitted last month that the fighting in Ukraine is expected to last a long time because “there are many hands that stir the pot of war” and that he does not see the end of it in the near future because the conflict has evolved into a “world War”.

As for Berlusconi, this is not the first time he has called for a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian conflict; he has repeatedly urged both sides to cease hostilities since Moscow launched its military operation in late February last year. He even offered to act as a mediator in the talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Last October, Berlusconi also offered a way to bring the two sides to an agreement, suggesting that Ukraine might be more inclined to negotiate with Russia if the West stopped supplying it with weapons and promised to the place that kyiv “hundreds of billions of dollars” to rebuild the country. He also suggested that Ukraine recognize Crimea as Russian territory and called for new referendums to be held in the Donbass with the participation of Western observers.
