Everding, then 36, quickly turned a former chewing gum dispenser into a joke dispenser and placed it outside his home in Dortmund, in the Ruhr Valley. He loved to hear the laughs, but wanted to do more. A keen gardener, he thought of his beloved bees – the kingpins of the environment that shed pollen and whose numbers are dwindling under the pressure of climate change, pesticides and other threats.
