BC COVID-19 Update: Expiry Dates Removed for Pickup and Restaurant Orders

| Local Business News | Today Headlines

The BC government has scrapped expiration dates on COVID-19 orders limiting the size of gatherings, banning indoor events and forcing gyms, bars and nightclubs to close – but it’s unclear though some of these restrictions might still be eased soon.

The province quietly updated the orders on Monday to remove references to restrictions expiring Jan. 18. Instead, each prescription now says it “has no expiry date”.

Health Minister Adrian Dix addressed the change on Twitter on Monday afternoon, writing that because previous orders were due to expire at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, they needed to be extended to ensure they would stay in place “until until Dr. Henry talks about it.”

Dix and Henry are due to appear at a live press conference at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. CTV News will broadcast the event online.

Health officials have previously indicated that measures around gatherings and events will be extended after January 18, but hinted that changes could be made to some of the other restrictions currently in place.

Closing orders for primary liquor bars that do not offer full meal service or fitness facilities have been a blow to many businesses in the province. A number of gym owners have spoken out against the closures in recent weeks, and several have openly defied them by welcoming their patrons back, despite ongoing concerns about widespread transmission of COVID-19.

While provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced on Friday that the government believes the peak of transmission during the Omicron wave has passed, in part based on sewage monitoring, she warned that from many more people will fall ill in the weeks to come.

The number of hospitalizations – which is a lagging indicator, meaning that trends follow the number of cases after a period of lagging – should also continue to climb for some time.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
