Bakhmut in ruins as Russia battles in eastern Ukraine

The Ukrainian city of Bahkmut has been reduced to rubble as Russian forces continue to shell the east of the country.

After Ukrainian forces retook the southern city of Kherson nearly a month ago, the battle heated up around Bakhmut, demonstrating President Putin’s desire for visible gains after weeks of sharp setbacks in Ukraine.

Taking Bakhmut would sever Ukraine’s supply lines and open a route for Russian forces to move towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the main Ukrainian strongholds in Donetsk.

But some analysts have questioned Russia’s strategic logic in its relentless pursuit of taking Bakhmut and surrounding areas which have also come under heavy shelling in recent weeks, and where Ukrainian officials have reported some residents living in damp basements.

Meanwhile, maintenance workers in Kyiv have been called in to free dozens of residents trapped in lifts as power cuts continue in the capital.

“The only thing that is difficult for me is to climb all the floors. We have a lot of high-rise buildings,” says Konstantin Krul, who now receives 15 calls per shift to free people stuck in the lifts.

In his overnight address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that “more than one and a half million people in the Odessa region were without electricity after an ‘night strike by Iranian drones’.

On Friday, Kyiv said regions in the war-torn country’s south, including Odessa, suffered the worst power cuts days after the latest wave of systematic Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid.
