Authorities say three skiers were killed and two injured in avalanche in central Austria

The victims were among a group of 11 skiers, eight of whom were struck by a patch of snow about 200 meters (655 feet) wide as they climbed a slope during a ski tour on Saturday in the Tweng region, in the province of Salzburg. .

Three of the skiers were buried by the avalanche, while two others were partially buried and were able to free themselves, regional police said in a statement. Rescuers were able to locate two of the others using their search devices; one was already dead and the other later died in a hospital in Klagenfurt.

The third buried skier was not wearing a search device. His body was found approximately four hours after the avalanche and recovered.

The victims were Austrians, two of them aged 19 and one aged 24. The two injured skiers were taken to a local hospital.
