Austria will enter a full lockdown against Covid from next week, becoming the first country in Europe to take this step in the latest wave of the virus.
The government has also said that vaccinations will be mandatory for the entire population from next February.
Under the new measures, the entire population will be locked up for at least 10 days, although this may be extended, Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said.
It comes days after the country sent around two million unvaccinated people into custody, telling them they had to stay home, unless it was for a list of reasons, including shopping or working.
Despite this, Covid cases have continued to skyrocket.
“We don’t want a fifth wave,” Schallenberg said when announcing the new lockdown, public broadcaster ORF reported.
