Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has refused to rule out the possibility of signing a transfer record Joao Felix leaving the club in January.

The 22-year-old has struggled to consistently replicate his best form since Atletico broke their transfer record to sign the Benfica forward for $ 142million in 2019.

Injuries and increased competition also mean he’s found regular first-team opportunities limited this quarter, sparking rumors of an exit during the winter window.

FourFourTwo cites reports from Spain that England side Liverpool could prepare a discounted $ 83million offer for the talented striker.

Simeone wants more from Joao Felix

Felix’s struggles this season were exacerbated by an ankle injury suffered while playing for Portugal at Euro 2021 which caused him to miss the start of the season, before contracting a calf problem in November.

The summer signings of Matheus Cunha and Antoine Griezmann have further limited his opportunities, with Felix having only made six starts in all competitions so far, scoring just once.

Asked if the striker would look to move away from the club next month, Simeone told a press conference: “I always understand everything, I am open to everything.

“The most important thing is the team. Joao is an important part of our team.”

However, Simeone also appeared to gift Felix an olive branch, revealing how impressed he was with his second-half appearance against Real Madrid last weekend in a 2-0 La Liga loss.

“He has to repeat performances like the one he gave the other day at the Bernabeu,” Simeone added. “He played 30-35 minutes and showed his talent. Hopefully he will repeat it because he is the player we need.”

“I have spoken with him a lot. I have nothing to explain to you about what needs to be worked on inside.

“Seeing Joao just a few minutes, you realize that he is a great player. He is going through a growing situation, we have seen him with Portugal and maybe here too. It is about maturing and grow to find the consistency that football demands. “
