State media report at least four people have died in collapse of workers’ dormitory in southern China’s Jiangxi Province
BEIJING – At least four people have died in the collapse of a workers’ dormitory in southern China’s Jiangxi Province, state media reported.
The building in the province’s Ganjiang New District collapsed on Monday evening, they said.
The building housed workers from a local pharmaceutical factory. Details on the age, size and number of injured construction workers were not immediately available.
China has sought to improve construction quality and industrial safety with the threat of lawsuits, but accidents still occur as companies cut corners to cut costs.
Aging infrastructure is also a growing problem, with gas line explosions a particular threat, along with poor adherence to safety standards for handling volatile chemicals.
