Arsenal vs PSV Preview

Wednesday’s Champions League clash in north London sees two teams go head-to-head with near-perfect records this season.

Arsenal have won five of their six matches in all competitions, drawing the other, leaving the London side just two points behind league leaders and reigning champions Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta’s side won the Community Shield earlier last month, beating last season’s treble on penalties, before kicking off the Championship season with back-to-back wins over Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

An unexpected 2-2 draw at home to Fulham followed, but back-to-back wins over Manchester United and Everton over the past two weekends mean the Gunners currently sit fourth in the table and are in good form ahead of their clash in the Champions League.

PSV have also won all but one of their matches this season, winning eight of the nine matches they have played in all competitions, with the only blemish on their record being a 2-2 draw against Rangers in the Champions League qualifier. Champions, only to win the second leg 5-1 at home.

Like Arsenal, the Eindhoven side also won their equivalent Community Shield, winning 1-0 against last season’s league champions Feyenoord to kick off their season with some silverware.

Peter Bosz’s side progressed through two qualifying rounds to secure their place in this season’s Champions League group stage for the first time since 2019, and have won all four of their league matches so far, leading the division on goal difference.

PSV have won their last three matches before Wednesday’s encounter by a combined score of 13-1, and will be looking to take something from their match against last season’s Premier League runners-up.

The two teams also faced each other in the Europa League group stage last season, with each team winning their respective home game, leaving Arsenal with just one win against the team in their last five matches dating back to 2004.
