AP Week in pictures: Middle East

This photo gallery highlights some of the most compelling images taken or posted by Associated Press photographers in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan region between September 23-29, 2021.

This week’s selection includes scenes from across the region, including Shia pilgrims descending to the sacred shrines of Imam Hussein and Imam Abbas for the Shiite Arbaeen Festival in Karbala, Iraq. The holiday marks the end of the forty-day mourning period following the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the 7th century.

In Beirut, mourners have buried Ibrahim Harb, 35, who was seriously injured in the massive explosion in the port of Beirut last year and who died almost 14 months after the explosion. His death brings the number of people killed by the explosion to at least 215, according to official records.

The gallery was curated by Oded Balilty, AP’s chief photographer for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza and Dusan Vranic, AP’s deputy news director for photos and storytelling.
