Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked a storm after making a political statement with her outfit at the Met Gala – sparking both praise and “hypocrisy” criticism on social media for a dress bearing the slogan “Tax the Rich “.
The New York Democrat MP attended the star-studded event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday. Tickets for the annual charity event have reportedly cost at least $ 35,000 per head, adding to the debate over her wardrobe choice.
Speaking to the press, Ocasio-Cortez said she wore the dress at an event mostly attended by celebrities and very wealthy people in order to “Bring all classes into the conversation” about “Supporting working families” and “Have a fair tax code”.
In a red carpet conversation with Vogue, she spoke about “What it means to be working class women of color at the Met” and expressed hope that the dress would be a topic of conversation.
“We can’t just play the game, but we have to break the fourth wall and challenge some institutions. While the Met is known for its show, we should be having a conversation about it, ” Ocasio-Cortez told the fashion magazine.
The dress sparked a discussion among social media users about whether the outfit was out of place during the glitzy event with Republican Congresswoman Tina Ramirez calling it “obscenely disconnected” and “completely hypocritical”.
.@AOC, who earns well more than double the national average salary and who voted to grant himself a salary increase, ran to the #MetGala (an event that costs $ 30,000 per ticket) wearing a “Tax the Rich” dress. It is obscenely disconnected and utterly hypocritical. pic.twitter.com/rsdBd0Xqr3

Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. wondered if she was a “Greatest fraud” to wear the dress “while she hangs out with a bunch of wealthy leftist elites” or not to apparently wear a face mask “after spending the last 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian Karen masks in the country.”
Which makes @AOC bigger fraud: the ‘tax the rich’ dress as it hangs out with a group of wealthy elites on the left or the lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the greatest masked Karen people authoritarian in the country? https://t.co/pE84Pjquh1

… 3.4 billion employees and constitutes 2% of US GDP, with Americans spending $ 380 billion in 2019 on clothing and footwear. It is therefore a message from the industry to the industry to contribute its fair share to support the consumers who have made their industry the 4th largest sector.

In posts on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, Ocasio-Cortez noted that the “The means is the message” and defended both his presence at the event and the outfit against the “haters”.
She said the elect are “Regularly invited and attending the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing our city’s cultural institutions that serve the public.”
A number of people also criticized the MP for attending the event instead of participating in a Black Lives Matter protest outside the venue against a recent police shooting. Several people were arrested by the NYPD during the protest.
Made @AOC negotiate for the staff of the #MetGala to get a living wage in exchange for appearing as protesters get their heads smashed by the NYPD outside of the event? I don’t hold my breath. https://t.co/KRiTAnurvp
