AOC sparks controversy with ‘Tax the Rich’ statement outfit at annual Met Gala – RT USA News

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked a storm after making a political statement with her outfit at the Met Gala – sparking both praise and “hypocrisy” criticism on social media for a dress bearing the slogan “Tax the Rich “.

The New York Democrat MP attended the star-studded event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday. Tickets for the annual charity event have reportedly cost at least $ 35,000 per head, adding to the debate over her wardrobe choice.

Speaking to the press, Ocasio-Cortez said she wore the dress at an event mostly attended by celebrities and very wealthy people in order to “Bring all classes into the conversation” about “Supporting working families” and “Have a fair tax code”.

In a red carpet conversation with Vogue, she spoke about “What it means to be working class women of color at the Met” and expressed hope that the dress would be a topic of conversation.

“We can’t just play the game, but we have to break the fourth wall and challenge some institutions. While the Met is known for its show, we should be having a conversation about it, ” Ocasio-Cortez told the fashion magazine.

The dress sparked a discussion among social media users about whether the outfit was out of place during the glitzy event with Republican Congresswoman Tina Ramirez calling it “obscenely disconnected” and “completely hypocritical”.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. wondered if she was a “Greatest fraud” to wear the dress “while she hangs out with a bunch of wealthy leftist elites” or not to apparently wear a face mask “after spending the last 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian Karen masks in the country.”

Several commentators Noted that Ocasio-Cortez had “Message decrease” she wanted to transmit and came across “as if she wanted attention”, but others versus that she was “Tell the truth to power”.

In posts on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, Ocasio-Cortez noted that the “The means is the message” and defended both his presence at the event and the outfit against the “haters”.

She said the elect are “Regularly invited and attending the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing our city’s cultural institutions that serve the public.”

A number of people also criticized the MP for attending the event instead of participating in a Black Lives Matter protest outside the venue against a recent police shooting. Several people were arrested by the NYPD during the protest.
