Antoine Griezmann has joined Atlético Madrid in a shock move from Barcelona on a one-season loan with an obligation to make the transfer permanent for € 40million (£ 34.4million).

The France international left Atlético for Barcelona on a € 120m contract in 2019, but fell short of expectations. He has scored 22 goals in 74 La Liga games for the Catalan club.

An exchange involving João Felix had been hinted at, but Barcelona signed Luuk de Jong from Sevilla instead. Griezmann spent five successful seasons at Atlético after joining Real Sociedad, his goals coming in significantly better than at Camp Nou, scoring 94 times in 180 league appearances. Atlético were close to loaning midfielder Saúl Ñíguez to Chelsea on Tuesday night.

On a busy day for Barcelona, they finalized the sale of right-back Emerson Royal to Tottenham on a five-year contract for € 25million. The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Real Betis and played for Brazil in the Copa América this summer.

Barcelona have also sold midfielder Ilaix Moriba to RB Leipzig for an initial € 16million, with up to € 6million to follow. Moriba, an 18-year-old Barcelona academy graduate, broke into the first team late last season but talks to extend his contract, which expires in June, have stalled.

Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have agreed to pay cuts to register new signing Sergio Agüero under financial fair play rules. Defender Gerard Pique had previously taken a similar step that saw Memphis Depay, Eric García and Rey Manaj enter La Liga. Manaj joined Spezia on loan.

“Sergio and Jordi Alba have agreed to change the financial terms of their contracts, including a pay cut for this season and postponement of payments for the remaining years,” Barcelona said.
