The parents of Anthony Huber, one of the men killed by Rittenhouse, say the verdict left them “heartbroken and angry”.
“Today’s verdict means there is no responsibility for the person who murdered our son,” Huber’s parents said in a written statement. published after the decision. “It sends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any city, incite violence, and then use the danger they created to justify shooting people in the streets.”
Huber, 26, attempted to disarm Rittenhouse as the 17-year-old fled the scene of his first fatal shooting, after killing Joseph Rosenbaum, 36.
Defense attorney Mark Richards argued at trial that Rittenhouse’s actions were defensible because Huber had a skateboard in one hand while he took Rittenhouse’s AR-15 style rifle with the other. . The skateboard, he argued, was used as a weapon, thus justifying Rittenhouse’s murderous response.
“No reasonable person having seen all the evidence could conclude that Mr. Rittenhouse acted in self-defense,” replied Huber’s parents. “In response to racist and violent calls to action from militia members, Mr. Rittenhouse went to Kenosha illegally armed with an assault rifle. “
Here is Hubers’ statement, in its entirety:
We are sorry and angry that Kyle Rittenhouse has been acquitted in his criminal trial for the murder of our son Anthony Huber. There was no justice today for Anthony, nor for the other victims of Mr. Rittenhouse, Joseph Rosenbaum and Gaige Grosskreutz.
We did not attend the trial because we could not bear to sit in a courtroom and watch videos of our son’s murder repeatedly, and because we were subjected to many hurtful comments. and bad guys over the past year. But we followed the trial closely, hoping it would bring us to a close.
This does not happen. Today’s verdict means that there is no responsibility for the person who murdered our son. It sends the unacceptable message that armed civilians can show up in any city, incite violence, and then use the danger they created to justify shooting people in the streets. We hope that honest people will join us in strongly rejecting this message and demanding more of our laws, our officials and our justice system.
Make no mistake: our fight to hold those responsible for Anthony’s death to account continues with full force. Neither Mr. Rittenhouse nor the Kenosha Police who authorized his bloody rampage will escape justice. Anthony will have his day in court.
No reasonable person having seen all the evidence could conclude that Mr. Rittenhouse acted in self-defense. In response to racist and violent calls to action by militiamen, Mr Rittenhouse illegally traveled to Kenosha armed with an assault rifle. He threatened his fellow citizens in the street. Despite being in blatant violation of a curfew, Kenosha police encouraged him to act violently. Kenosha police told militia members that they would push peaceful protesters towards the militia so that the militia could “deal with them”. Shortly after, Mr. Rittenhouse killed Joseph Rosenbaum. The police did nothing. Concerned citizens, confronted by a random person shooting in the street, intervened to stop the violence. Anthony was shot in the chest while trying to disarm Mr Rittenhouse and stop his shooting. Yet the police did nothing. Mr. Rittenhouse continued to shoot, mutilating Gaige Grosskreutz. Police let Mr. Rittenhouse leave the scene freely. Mr. Rittenhouse came to Kenosha armed to kill. The Kenosha police encouraged him to act violently, and our son died as a result.
We are so proud of Anthony and we love him so much. He is a hero who sacrificed his own life to protect other innocent civilians. We ask you to remember Anthony and keep him in your prayers.
