Amber Heard has denied lying about donating $7 million to two charities from her Johnny Depp divorce payout, despite overwhelming video evidence shown in court during the defamation trial in former couple’s high stakes.
The Aquaman actress was subjected to intense toasting under cross-examination by Mr Depp’s lawyer on Monday afternoon, where she claimed she had been unable to make the payments because of the costs incurred by her ex-husband to sue her.
“I always intend to honor all my promises,” she said.
“I wish he would stop chasing me so I could.”
When the couple’s $7million divorce settlement was reached in August 2016, Ms Heard pledged to split the entire payment equally between the ACLU and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
ACLU chief operating officer and general counsel Terence Dougherty said earlier in the trial that the charity has so far received less than half of the promised $3.5 million.
Mr. Dougherty said $350,000 was paid directly by Ms. Heard, $100,000 was paid through Mr. Depp, $500,000 was paid through a donor-advised fund and that $350,000 had also been paid through a donor-advised fund – for a total donation of $1.3 million.
When Ms Heard said she was unable to fulfill her pledge to make the donations because her ex-husband was suing her during Monday’s testimony, Mr Depp’s lawyer pushed back on the fact that 13 months elapsed between receiving the full divorce settlement and filing the lawsuit. .
The court saw a clip of Ms Heard’s appearance on a Danish TV show RTL late at night in October 2018, where she said “‘$7 million was donated in total'”.
“I split the amount between the ACLU and the CHLA. The ACLU is a leading nonprofit organization in the United States and works on behalf of marginalized communities on the ground and in legislative reform,” she said on the show,
“I didn’t want anything.”
The final payment of $2.3 million was paid on February 1, 201, the court heard.
Ms Heard claimed she used the terms ‘promised’ and ‘given’ interchangeably.
Mr Depp is suing his ex-wife for defamation over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post where she describes herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence”.
the Pirates of the Caribbean The actor is not named in the article, which is titled “I spoke out against sexual violence – and faced the wrath of our culture. This must change”.
However, Mr Depp claims this falsely implies he is a domestic abuser – which he strongly denies – and has left him struggling to land roles in Hollywood. He’s suing for $50 million.
Ms Heard is fighting back for $100million, accusing Mr Depp of orchestrating a ‘smear campaign’ against her and describing her lawsuit as a continuation of ‘abuse and harassment’.
The trial began on April 11 in Fairfax, Va., with explosive testimony in the courtroom.
