The God Squad is no joke.

In an interview with E! News, Virtuous gemstones Star Adam DeVine revealed the origins of the God Squad, a group formed by his character, Kelvin Gemstone, the son of mega-church pastor Dr. Eli Gemstone (John Goodman).

Adam explained that the show’s creator Danny McBride found inspiration in the real life of a Texas evangelist John Jacobs, who founded the famous Christian band Power Team in the late 1980s. Vice, the ministry was incredibly popular among youth group leaders, who hired the Power Team to talk to teen worshipers “about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, premarital sex, and gangs.”

After educating the children about the risks of such activities, they invited them and their parents to evening performances, where they broke flaming bricks with their arms and walked through blocks of ice in the name of God.

Danny thought the group fit the theme of the HBO series, which centers on the Gemstone family, and decided to make them part of Kelvin’s story for season two. But the Workaholic the star told E! News that his character was a “weird,” so naturally, “he made it a little bit different.”
