Premier League great Brad Friedel is certain Aaron Ramsdale’s time at Arsenal is coming to an end.
Ramsdale, the 25-year-old England international, has been on the Gunners bench for the last two games, making way for summer signing David Raya.
Raya joined Brentford in a £3m loan deal with a £27m option to buy and has long been admired by new manager Mikel Arteta.
Arteta has insisted to the media that he will choose his goalkeeper for tactical reasons, but the fact that Raya has started in both the Premier League and now the Champions League has many people questioning his declarations.
One of them is Friedel, who has the third most appearances of any goalkeeper in Premier League history, and offered his extensive knowledge to talkSPORT.
Asked if it was over for Ramsdale if Raya started this weekend’s north London derby against Tottenham, the American replied: “Absolutely.
“I thought the second they signed him, they signed him to be the new No.1, I don’t think you pay that much money for someone with a year left on his contract , I know he signed an additional contract and continued on loan, but it was for other reasons.
“I think they really liked Raya, so when he became available, they pushed for him.”
Ramsdale joined Arsenal in the summer of 2021, leaving Sheffield United in a £30million deal.
Last season he almost helped the Gunners win their first league title in almost two decades, which Friedel believes will see him join another big club where he can play every match.
“It’s very hard for Ramsdale but it’s the manager’s decision,” said the former Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper.
“I guess Ramsdale, at the end of this season, will have to do what Matt Turner did at the end of the previous season and find somewhere else to play.
“I know it’s early and people will say we have to see what he does, but I think Raya was named No. 1, you thought maybe they could trade if they played at Ramsdale in the Champions League, but that didn’t happen.
“I think we will see Raya in goal and he will be the starting number 1 this season.”
Friedel recalled a similar situation when he joined Spurs and had competition in goal, but explained the difference is he knew this was the deal coming.
“I wasn’t frustrated at Spurs because I was told what was happening,” he said. “I’m pretty sure Raya was told something and now it’s happening.
“If I was Ramsdale I would be really frustrated, but the good news for him is he is a top goalkeeper and I think he will find somewhere to land and it will be a top club, he has played very well last season.
“Mikel Arteta said he wanted to have two or three players in each position, but I think as a goalkeeper it’s difficult to have that, I think your No.1 needs to know that you are #1 and then you will get the best of them.
“I think it’s really important for the No.1 to play with all four backs consistently and if you have to swap, I don’t think it works very well.
“If your goalkeeper makes mistakes you have to support him, you support him because he is your number 1 and every goalkeeper is going to make mistakes.
“It’s really difficult to play as a goalkeeper if you think that every time I make a mistake I’m going to be eliminated. I don’t think that’s good psychology.”
