The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have unearthed hilarious and heartwarming photos of creatures that have been essentially themselves since 2015.

And this year is no exception. The recently announced 2021 contest winners and finalists include a visibly uncomfortable monkey, a trio of talkative raccoons, a cheerful gathering of birds, a gravity-defying fish and an almighty prairie dog.

A panel of judges sorts through thousands of submissions from expert and novice photographers, and determines a winner for each of the different categories – with the exception of the Audience Award, which is left to audience members. The big winner receives a handmade trophy in a workshop in Tanzania and a week-long safari in Kenya.

This year’s first prize goes to Ken Jensen. His photo, taken in Yunnan, China, shows a golden silk monkey in a rather awkward position with an appropriately surprised look on his face.

The caption reads: “This is actually a display of aggression, but in the position the monkey is in, it looks quite painful!”

Another crowd favorite shows a pigeon with a loose leaf covering its entire face, captioned “I guess summer is over”. The shot, by John Speirs, won the Audience Award.

Rahul Lakhmani won the single video category with a video titled “Hugging Best Friend After Lockdown”. In it, a bird perches expectantly on a branch while another dives towards it, knocking them both out of the frame. Surely this is a time that many humans can relate to this year, too.

The competition is more than just a pleasure to see. It also aims to raise awareness of the importance of conservation.

“The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards were born out of the need for a wildlife photography competition that was light, unpretentious and, most importantly, that could make a difference for animals and our natural world,” read its website. “Its founders realized that laughter was a particularly effective tool for engaging audiences of all ages and cultures with images of creatures they might never be able to see for themselves – and that the world could lose. for ever.”

Organizers Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE, Tom Sullam and Michelle Wood also say they donate 10% of their total net income to conservation organizations that protect endangered wildlife. This year, the proceeds will be donated to the Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program in Borneo.

Nature heals, as they say. But he still has a long way to go.
