A municipal policewoman was injured Friday morning in a knife attack in La Chapelle-sur-Erdre, near Nantes, and the suspect is on the run, according to the gendarmerie.

The attack took place in the premises of the municipal police and the suspect fled on foot, said the gendarmerie.

Children confined to schools

“Children are confined to schools and colleges in the city,” a municipal official told AFP.

80 gendarmes, including the GIGN branch in Nantes, were deployed to find the perpetrator, as well as two helicopters, three dog teams and a squadron of mobile gendarmes. The research section of the Nantes gendarmerie is responsible for the investigation.

“Avoid the area and strictly respect the instructions of the gendarmes,” warned the national gendarmerie on Twitter.

The Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, is expected on site in the afternoon, announced his entourage.
