A German woman allegedly turned off a patient’s oxygen machine because of the noise

The elderly woman lay in a hospital bed in the south-west German city of Mannheim, with a machine supplying her with the oxygen her life depended on.

But for another patient, the noise from the device was apparently too much to bear.

The 72-year-old woman “is strongly suspected of having turned off the main switch” of the machine, according to the police and the prosecution, “after feeling disturbed by the noise coming from the oxygen apparatus”.

The first incident in which the unnamed woman allegedly cut off the oxygen supply happened sometime before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Hospital staff intervened, telling her the oxygen supply was vital for her 79-year-old roommate.

However, about an hour later, the suspect allegedly turned off the machine again.

This time, the consequences were immediate: the victim had to be resuscitated, the police and the Mannheim public prosecutor’s office said, while an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, who faces charges of attempted murder. ‘manslaughter.

His former roommate in the hospital is no longer in a life-threatening condition, according to a joint statement released Thursday, but is still being treated in intensive care.

The suspect appeared in court on Wednesday and was taken to jail while investigations continue. It is not known whether the two women knew each other.
