The elderly woman lay in a hospital bed in the south-west German city of Mannheim, with a machine supplying her with the oxygen her life depended on.

The 72-year-old woman “is strongly suspected of having turned off the main switch” of the machine, according to the police and the prosecution, “after feeling disturbed by the noise coming from the oxygen apparatus”.

The first incident in which the unnamed woman allegedly cut off the oxygen supply happened sometime before 8 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Hospital staff intervened, telling her the oxygen supply was vital for her 79-year-old roommate.

However, about an hour later, the suspect allegedly turned off the machine again.
