COLOMBO – A Navy spokesperson said a ferry capsized in eastern Sri Lanka on Tuesday, killing at least six people.
Twelve people were rescued, Navy spokeswoman Captain Indika de Silva said. It was not immediately clear how many people were on the ferry.
Four children were among the dead, according to a police officer and a hospital worker who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
The ferry was traveling from Kurinchakeni to the town of Kinniya along the country’s east coast and about 260 kilometers (160 miles) northeast of the capital, Colombo, the navy spokesman said.
