A dead in the crash of a Civil Security helicopter in Isère – France

This Sunday, shortly before 4:30 p.m., a civil security helicopter crashed in Isère, near the town of Villard-de-Lans. Five members were on board. On Twitter, the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, announced a death, that of a mechanic, and addressed “all his support to the large family” of Civil Security and mountain rescue. The reasons for the accident are not yet known.

“A priori, it was a civil protection helicopter that came to the aid of an injured mountain biker. The helicopter was seen to make two approach turns and suddenly lose altitude. We no longer see the helicopter, a yellowish smoke then two very important explosions and a black smoke ”explained, on BFMTV, a witness. The latter also said that people saw two pilots bleeding out of the helicopter and rescuing a third person.

Sunday at the end of the afternoon, the prefecture of Isère had indicated that the helicopter had crashed to the ground with five people on board, near this town located in the heart of the Vercors massif. “The helicopter mechanic was declared dead despite the care provided by the rescuers,” she confirmed in the early evening. The other members of the crew – the pilot, a doctor from the SAMU and two gendarmes from the PGHM (High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon) – were taken care of by the medical teams and evacuated to the Grenoble University Hospital. One of them presents serious injuries, the others are more slightly injured, specifies the prefecture.

The “undetermined” causes of the accident

The relief operations “are over and have mobilized significant land and air resources with the help of three helicopters from neighboring departments”, details the prefecture. The causes of the accident are, for the time being, “undetermined”.
The Grenoble prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation and seized the air transport research section based in Roissy, as well as the Isère gendarmerie group, announced the Grenoble public prosecutor, Eric Vaillant.

Two investigators from the research section are due to arrive at the scene in the evening and will be joined by three others on Monday, he said.

For his part, the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, former deputy for Isère, tweeted: “Upset by the crash of a Civil Security helicopter in Isère. The healthcare teams are mobilized to take care of the rescuers, some of whom are seriously injured. Support for PGHM, SAMU, emergencies and civil security ”.
