A ‘crime’ of passion: Whitman cops help couple’s unforgettable proposal – Boston News, Weather, Sports

WHITMAN, MASS. (WHDH) – Whitman Police responded to a particular type of call this month: helping a man pull off an unforgettable proposal with a prank so good it almost looks criminal.

A friend from the department asked officers to help a man, Wayne Morse, with his proposal to his then-girlfriend, Kristen Fleming. After explaining their plan, police were on board and were approved to help by Chief Timothy Hanlon, according to a Facebook post from the department.

With plans in place for the proposal on Friday, September 9, Morse and Fleming went to dinner with Fleming’s parents at The Patio at McGuiggan’s. It was around 6 p.m. when two officers and a sergeant also showed up at the restaurant.

Fleming later said she joked about Morse’s arrest when she saw the police arrive.

“I said [to my family] ‘Wayne, what have you done? They come for you,” Fleming described. “And then they come, and they have a picture of him!”

According to the department, Morse had sent them a photo of himself and what he was wearing beforehand to avoid any cases of mistaken identity.

Police then appeared to arrest Morse, who “refused” before officers handcuffed him and took him to a cruiser. Asking to speak to her future fiancé, Fleming went to the vehicle to figure out what was going on when the police let Morse out to get on his knees and ask the question.

The gag was a success: he received a “Yes!” of his new bride.

“I was just horrified – I was ready to kill him,” Fleming joked. “He’s so lucky it ended like this because I was so angry.”

“Everything happened like everything was scripted,” Morse said.

In their Facebook post, the police department said it was grateful to have participated in the unique proposal. They also noted that it was a “one-time-only opportunity”.

“Please don’t flood our answering machines with all kinds of crazy requests,” the message said. “To Wayne & Kristen: The Whitman Police Department wishes you much love, health and happiness in your future. Congratulations!”
