The bodies of four people have been found in the Canadian province of Manitoba, near the US border, in what the Royal Canadian Mounted Police believe was a failed crossing attempt during a blizzard.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The bodies of four people, including a baby and a teenager, have been found in the Canadian province of Manitoba, near the United States border, in what the Royal Canadian Mounted Police believe was an attempted crossing missed during a blizzard.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Jane MacLatchy said they are believed to have died of exposure.

MacLatchy said U.S. authorities notified RCMP on Wednesday of another group of people who were apprehended after crossing into the United States from the town of Emerson, Manitoba. This group had items for a baby but no babies were with them.

This led authorities to believe that other people may be missing and the RCMP immediately launched a search in Canada. MacLatchy said the search covered difficult terrain with deep, drifting snow. Officers used all-terrain vehicles to get around as it was ‘virtually impassable’.

Officers located three bodies together – a man, a woman and a baby – just 10 meters (yards) from the border. The search continued and a teenager was found a short distance away.

The search for possible survivors or additional victims continued Wednesday night and officers were still patrolling the area Thursday, RCMP said.

“We are very concerned that this attempted crossing may have been somehow facilitated and that these people, including a baby, were left to fend for themselves in the midst of a blizzard.” , said MacLatchy. “These victims had to deal not only with the cold, but also with endless fields, large snowdrifts and total darkness.”

MacLatchy said others are often involved in organizing people to cross the border, which is criminal and extremely dangerous. In the past, it was more common to see northbound crossings from the United States to Canada, she added. Authorities did not specify the nationality of the victims.

The RCMP have warned that people should not attempt to cross the border outside a checkpoint, in either direction, as it can be deadly.

RCMP said they are working with US Customs and Border Protection and the US Department of Homeland Security.
