(The Center Square) – More than 30 Minnesota cities and counties will receive nearly $24 million in Small Town Development Program grants for the rehabilitation of residential and commercial properties.

“We are committed to making Minnesota the best state to live, work and raise a family, no matter where you live in the state,” Gov. Tim Walz said in a statement. “These grants will boost our economy and help Greater Minnesota communities across the state grow and prosper.”

SCDP grants are awarded to Minnesota cities with populations under 50,000 and townships and counties with populations under 200,000. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development administers the grants, which are part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program.

“SCDP grants provide Greater Minnesota communities with funding to meet their needs for safe, affordable housing and low- to moderate-income friendly living environments,” DEED Commissioner Matt Varilek said in a statement. communicated.

To receive funding, projects must benefit low- or moderate-income people depending on the area, eliminate slum or blight conditions, or address an urgent community need to eliminate a threat to health or public security.

Communities can request funding for one or more of the following types of projects:

  • Projects to improve owner-occupied or rental residential buildings to increase the quality of housing suitable for individual or family occupancy. Examples include exterior repair and replacement projects, insulation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lead paint remediation, or accessibility modifications.
  • Commercial property improvement projects for buildings occupied by retail and independent businesses. This may include facade improvements (e.g., awnings, exterior panels), building code issues, and energy efficiency.
  • Projects to improve public facilities that serve neighborhoods or communities, such as community centers, streetscapes, or wastewater treatment projects.

This year’s grant recipients include:

  • Town of Baudette: $1.2 million for the rehabilitation of rental housing and the improvement of public facilities.
  • Ville du Sacré-Cœur: $1.1 million for the rehabilitation of owner-occupied housing and the improvement of public facilities.
  • City of Tracy: $1.1 million for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation and commercial rehabilitation.
  • Town of Edgerton: $1 million for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation, rental housing rehabilitation and commercial rehabilitation.
  • Town of Red Lake Falls: $929,200 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation, rental housing rehabilitation and commercial rehabilitation.
  • City of Staples: $948,750: owner-occupied housing rehabilitation, rental housing rehabilitation and commercial rehabilitation.
  • Town of Watkins, $943,000: owner-occupied housing rehabilitation and commercial rehabilitation.

The preliminary proposal deadline for 2024 SCDP grants is November 29 and the final application deadline is April 17, 2024. Communities can apply here.
