India ended their joint 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against Afghanistan on June 15.
They finished third in Group E with seven points from eight matches. Although Igor Stimac’s side did not reach the next round of the World Cup qualifiers, they qualified directly for the 2023 Asian Cup third qualifying round.
During the campaign, Stimac’s men had three different goal scorers. Sunil Chhetri scored three goals while Adil Khan and Seiminlen Doungel scored one goal each.
Chhetri scored a goal against Oman in their very first group stage game, then scored a brace in India’s only victory in the competition against Bangladesh in the second stage. Adil Khan scored the tying goal against Bangladesh in Calcutta in the first leg and Doungel scored against Afghanistan in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Only Sri Lanka, Nepal, Guam and Cambodia had fewer goalscorers (2) than the Blue Tigers. Iran had the most goalscorers (18).
It should be noted that Korea DPR withdrew from qualifying midway through the campaign.

How did India fare in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers?
India started their World Cup qualifying streak with a narrow 2-1 loss to Oman at home, followed by a historic and goalless draw against Asian champions Qatar in Doha. In their third and fourth games, the Blue Tigers drew 1-1 with Bangladesh and Afghanistan, followed by a 1-0 loss to Oman away from home.
They resumed their campaign against Qatar on June 3 and lost 1-0, but followed up with a 2-0 victory over Bangladesh. In their last game, they drew 1-1 against Afghanistan.
