2021 MLB Rankings: Playoff bracket update, magic numbers as of September 14

The 2021 MLB season is drawing to a close, and as it draws to a close, several playoff races have drawn attention.

All but two of the division races appear to be stuck. The Braves jumped to first place in August and are in first place in early September with the Phillies and Mets not too far behind them. The Giants have quietly been the best team in baseball for most of the season, but still find themselves pushing back an incredibly talented Dodgers team in the NL West.

The two races for the wild card appear to be fights to the end. In the American League, the Red Sox and Yankees entered September clinging to the top two places, but came under pressure from the Blue Jays, Mariners and Athletics. The team that finishes second in the NL West is almost guaranteed to finish the first wild card, but second place is wide open as the Reds, Padres, Phillies, Cardinals and Mets are all within striking distance of each other.

MLB magic numbers for 2021

This is the part where fans of playoff teams – or those just outside – really start to pull out the calculators. The magic number is the combination of a team’s wins and / or losses by its closest competitor needed to land a playoff spot.

The magic number is shown for each team leading the division to win the title, and the elimination number is shown for teams behind in the division. The same information is provided for those who are looking for the wild card. The information comes from MLB.com.
