2 people in a car fleeing a traffic control are killed in an accident in Anoka

Two men were killed after their car crashed in Anoka while fleeing an attempted traffic stop in Coon Rapids, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The crash involving the car and a pickup truck happened shortly before midnight Tuesday on Main Street near Ferry Street, the sheriff’s office said. The driver of the van was slightly injured.

The identity of the occupants of the vehicles has not yet been released.

According to the sheriff’s office:

Coon Rapids police attempted to stop traffic around 11:35 p.m. on the northwest. Hanson Boulevard near NW. Gateway reader. The man driving fled and the police squad chased him.

“Coon Rapids officers fully disengaged and the pursuit ended once the car drove through Anoka,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

The accident happened about a kilometer away. The driver was dead at the scene and a man with him was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“This investigation is in its early stages and no additional information will be released at this time,” the statement from the sheriff’s office continued.
