2 injured after man fleeing police crashes into another vehicle in St. Paul

A car chase in the eastern metropolitan Twin Cities area on Friday afternoon ended in a crash, a recovered handgun, two people injured and a man in custody.

Woodbury police said at 1:23 p.m. Friday that officers had located a vehicle that had fled Minnesota State Patrol the previous night. They tried to box up the vehicle, but the driver fled, leading police west on Interstate 94. Police attempted a PIT maneuver, a tactic commonly used by law enforcement to disable vehicles, but it didn’t work. Officers halted the pursuit as the vehicle continued north on White Bear Avenue in St. Paul.

Moments later, the vehicle crashed another block in front of police, who responded to the crash.

A 33-year-old man from St. Paul was arrested and two people from the other vehicle were taken to hospital, where they were in stable condition. State Patrol is investigating the accident.

The Star Tribune generally does not name suspects until they are charged. Police said methamphetamine, other narcotics, a handgun and ammunition were recovered from the man and his vehicle. He was arrested and taken to the Washington County Jail.

In a news release, Woodbury Police said the matter remains an open and active investigation.
